What is a VPN, in one sentence?

A VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your PC and a VPN server, so the networks in between cannot read your traffic, and the websites you visit see the server's IP address instead of yours.

Will a VPN slow down my internet?

A little, because your data takes a detour through the VPN server and is encrypted on the way. With WireGuard and a nearby server, most people do not notice the difference. Far-away servers add more delay, so choose the closest location unless you need a specific country.

Is it safe to use public Wi-Fi with VPN for WINDOWS?

Much safer. Others on the same hotspot cannot read or alter your traffic, because it is encrypted before it leaves your laptop. On hotel and café networks, finish the Wi-Fi sign-in page first, then connect. Turn on Auto-connect on untrusted Wi-Fi so you never forget.

Does a VPN make me anonymous?

No. It hides your IP address and encrypts your traffic, but websites can still recognise you through accounts you sign in to, cookies and browser fingerprinting. Think of a VPN as privacy from the network, not invisibility.

Do I still need antivirus?

Yes. A VPN does not detect or remove malware and does not block phishing pages. Keep Windows Security switched on and apply Windows updates as they arrive.

What does the kill switch actually do?

If the tunnel drops, for example when your Wi-Fi reconnects or the laptop wakes from sleep, the kill switch blocks all internet traffic until the VPN is back. That stops apps from quietly sending data over your unprotected connection.

Which protocol should I pick?

Leave it on Automatic. The app uses WireGuard by default, switches to OpenVPN (TCP) on networks that block WireGuard, and uses IKEv2 when you move between Wi-Fi and mobile data. See the protocol comparison.

Does it work on Windows 10?

Yes, on Windows 10 version 22H2. Note that Microsoft stopped regular security updates for Windows 10 on 14 October 2025. A VPN protects your connection but cannot fix an outdated operating system, so Windows 11 is recommended.

Does it work on Arm-based Windows laptops?

Yes. VPN for WINDOWS runs natively on both x64 (Intel and AMD) and Arm64 PCs running Windows 11.

Can I still use my printer and other home devices?

Yes. Turn on Allow local network access in Settings, or add the device's app to Split tunneling. On public networks, keep local access off.

Is it good for gaming and video calls?

WireGuard adds very little delay with a nearby server, so calls and most games work well. For competitive games where every millisecond counts, you can add the game to split tunneling so it uses your direct connection.

Can I watch streaming services while connected?

Usually, yes. Some streaming services limit their catalogue by region or restrict VPN connections in their terms. Connecting to a server in your own country typically gives the most reliable results.

Is using a VPN legal?

In most countries, including across the EU, the UK and North America, yes. A few countries restrict or ban VPNs, so check local rules when you travel. Anything illegal without a VPN is still illegal with one.

How do I know it is really working?

Look for four green ticks in the app, check that Windows lists the connection as Connected under Settings → Network & internet → VPN, and compare your public IP address before and after connecting. The verification checklist walks you through it.
